"In December of 2016, I got to join my sister and her kiddos for a once-in-a-lifetime family Christmas vacation to Hawaii. From the moment we started planning the trip, my sister really encouraged me to find something to do on the trip that was just for me, since she knew the general activities would be mostly family-oriented and kid-friendly. I got obsessed with the idea of taking a doorless helicopter ride, so that I could photograph the island of Kauai, along the Na Pali Coast, from an aerial perspective. So that’s what I did. And it was absolutely surreal. As a kid I was super into rollercoasters, so I’ve always loved an adrenaline rush. The sensation was simultaneously heavenly — floating above everything, into the mountainscape, helicopter winds swirling all around you — and a little bit terrifying, in an “this could be how I die” kind of way. But I didn’t die (I was very well harnessed in) and I ended up making some of my all-time favorite photos. This was one of them."
